Hand-held, iPhone 11 Pro

Hand-held, iPhone 11 Pro

Night Mode on iPhone 11 is Still Amazing

Simon Abrams October 16, 2020

Ok, this is a hand-held image straight out of camera from my recently antiquated iPhone 11 Pro. It’s a very low light scene (which isn’t evident just by looking at the result), with moving subjects, and I think it looks great. Pixel-peepers will grumble about the chunky pixels in the deep shadow areas, and in the leaves at the far end of the tunnel. Fine, have at it. But to me, this is a good illustration of what’s possible with the growth of computational photography. It’s an image that I simply couldn’t have made with a conventional camera. Or maybe I could - with a little planning and a tripod; definitely not the way I shot this one - spontaneously seeing the moment that was about to happen, and swiping from the Lock Screen to the Camera app and hitting the shutter.

I won’t get into the Pixel vs Galaxy vs iPhone question here (j/k, iPhone, lol). But seriously, I think all of these modern devices are capable of producing fantastic images, and you really have to work to criticize something about any of them. Which, if you’re a fan of technology, is a good thing. If I had to nit-pick one thing, it’s that the colors, which are a result of the various makers’ AI juju, can be a little surreal sometimes. But I think that judging by the recent iPhone 12 demos, this is evolving nicely.

Here are a couple more examples.

That funky green dot is a bit of lens flare, and I wish it wasn’t there.
